Emergency on wheels (In running train)

It was the 2nd week of January, 2016. I was returning back to Hyderabad from Kolkata by Train (Shalimar Express.). Suddenly at around midnight i heard some sound from the adjacent compartment. It looked like some medical emergency. 

I asked my husband to see what has happened? 

One parson some 50+ years had become unconscious and his family was crying and trying to get help. Some members of the family was looking for the TTE and trying to get some doctor to attend the patient. One 26 - 27 years old girl ( the patient's daughter, latter on i came to know that she was also allopathic doctor. ) was giving him some salt water and trying to wake him up.

I tried to talk to the family. They did not revealed much and were focused to stop the train at some station and get him into some hospital.

Some other passengers from the same compartment told us that he took INSULIN and went to sleep and suddenly he felt unconscious and not responding.

The place was crowded and i was not able to go there. So I asked my husband to go and check his pulse and breath. 

It looked like a case of Hypoglycemia. The patient has taken his normal dose of Insulin but he had not taken enough food and accidentally it become Insulin overdose. 

After analyzing the situation, i asked them to stop giving the salt water and give him some sugar water. Initially they hesitated, but when i explained, they agreed. I asked some fellow passengers and a lady readily gave some sugar which she was carrying for his child. The sugar syrup was administered to him slowly. After few minutes we saw some movement in his legs. 

I asked the family to continue with that sugar syrup and gently rub his palm and feet.

Slowly he started recovering. And he gained his consciousness. 

I asked them to give him some tea or coffee with sugar. They did the same and now the patient was fully conscious and sitting on his berth and sipping the tea.

In the meantime, the train has stopped at a major junction (Visakhapatnam). The TTE has informed the railway authorities about the medical emergency.

The doctor arrived inside the coach and checked the patient and declared him fit. The train started its onward journey.

In the morning, the wife of the patient came to me and thanked me for the help and asked which hospital i work at? She also told me that her daughter ( who was giving the salt water ) is a doctor in allopathy and going to Hyderabad for Interview in a famous hospital. I wished her good-luck and settled in my berth.

After settling in my berth, one question came in my mind. Why only allopathy doctors are honoured by the railways? Why the allopathic doctors get a discount on train ticket even if they are not able to help the fellow passengers in crisis whereas the practitioners of other stream doesn't get the recognition despite saving the life in crisis. Why this discrimination? Why this un-touchability towards other system of medicine?

There is one more important point worth mentioning here. Many railway employees (both serving and retired) have taken my help for them self and their family. And i am happy with this honour.

I am happy that i was able to help a patient in need. The patient and his family were happy that they got proper medical attention and a major crisis was averted. Indian Railways must also be happy, crisis was managed well.

Insulin dependency reduced by 63% in Type1 Diabetic patient.

Type 1 Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes is a condition when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin required by the body and the blood glucose start giving a higher reading. The patients become dependent on external insulin for the rest of their life.

Most of the time the Type1 Diabetic patients not only fights their own condition but also with the society when they try to look for a cure. Juvenile Diabetes - A curative approach

Most people don't understand Juvenile Diabetes fully and just take half treatment for it and say its incurable. Actually One has to understand in Juvenile Diabetes why the pancreas in not producing enough insulin. Doctors simply say that the pancreas got damaged. But why it got damaged? The patient was not born with a damaged pancreas. If someone digs little further then the doctor tells that its immune disorder and its incurable....... But anyone tried to think beyond that???
